Continuously variable
for added comfort |

The Audi multitronic® is the
first automatic transmission that transfers high
engine power to the road without gearshift jolts.
The heart of this revolutionary continuously variable
automatic transmission is the link-plate chain.
The difference between a geared transmission and
the multitronic® is that, on the multitronic®,
the engines most economical range is not achieved
by various ratios, but by a link-plate chain that
can simulate an infinite number of ratios.
Two hydraulically adjustable sets of pulley halves
tension the link-plate chain, which has been designed
to withstand high torque levels, and enable a continuously
variable ratio. This means that the engine always
operates in the most economical speed range.
The multitronic® ensures a much lower fuel consumption
than comparable automatic transmissions as a result.
This makes the Audi multitronic® what must be
the most intelligent and convenient link between
driver and road. |

The quattro® principle is as brilliant as it is simple: when
all four wheels are driven permanently, each wheel
ideally only has to transfer half as much power
to the road than is the case with conventional systems
with only one driven axle. Better traction, greater
cornering stability and outstanding straight-line
stability add up to more driving pleasure combined
with a high level of safety! |
