| The Audi multitronic® is the
first automatic transmission that transfers high
engine power to the road without gearshift jolts.
The heart of this revolutionary continuously variable
automatic transmission is the link-plate chain.
The difference between a geared transmission
and the multitronic® is that, on the multitronic®,
the engines most economical range is not
achieved by various ratios, but by a link-plate
chain that can simulate an infinite number of
ratios.
Two hydraulically adjustable sets of pulley halves
tension the link-plate chain, which has been designed
to withstand high torque levels, and enable a
continuously variable ratio. This means that the
engine always operates in the most economical
speed range.
The multitronic® ensures a much lower fuel
consumption than comparable automatic transmissions
as a result.
This makes the Audi multitronic® what must
be the most intelligent and convenient link between
driver and road.
